Rio Lagartos México

Ria Lagartos is situated very close to Valladolid on the Yucatan Peninsula. This area was designated as a Special Biosphere Reserve in 1979 and a special permit issued by the relevant authorities is required for entry. Within the 60,000 protected hectares, it houses the largest population of flamingos in Mexico, with over 40 thousand birds. Near the village of Lagartos, the reserve shares its name; its broad streets are made of sand and beach shells, and wooden houses with light-colored frames face the coast. In this village, there is a central park where couples, the elderly, and of course, always cheerful children gather among the square's planters every evening.
